Panel discussions and fireside chats can provide an opportunity for more informal discussions on complex issues, but their value depends upon the quality of the questions and the willingness of the participants to speak openly. It is safe to say that last month’s Women in Law Forum in Dubai delivered on both fronts.
Across two panel discussions and one fireside chat, attendees heard from leading female partners and GCs on a diverse range of topics—from the joys of motherhood to key industry trends. However, it was the deep dive into the individual (and varied) career journeys of the panellists that resonated the most.
A career in law often follows a traditional path, and an early awareness of your ambition, interests, and goals can help you get ahead. While there is no denying this, the panellists’ stories showed that careers in law can follow non-linear paths, and that some people take time to decide what is right for them. We heard stories of pivots early in careers, the benefits of honing your craft before pushing for a promotion, and the highly personal decision around starting a family. The panellists’ experiences demonstrated that there is more than one route to take, but it was clear that each of the panellists shared some core traits and beliefs—indicating that mindset plays an important role.

Firstly, they love what they do. Identifying and responding to new market trends, working on the most groundbreaking matters, and the ability to train the next generation of lawyers were discussed with enthusiasm and energy by the panellists. This appreciation of the positives gives them the energy to persevere when hard work and sacrifice are required.
Secondly, there is no short cut for hard work. All the panellists highlighted the importance of investment and sacrifice. Acceptance of the need for hard work, and the willingness to put in the time and effort over a long period is essential to success. Their commitment and grit were recognised by leadership early on in their careers, and led to more opportunities.
Thirdly, they are willing to take calculated risks. Several panellists spoke about their career moves and how transformational they were. Sometimes a leap of faith is required to achieve your dreams.
To summarise, the Women in Law Forum offered thoughtful, candid insights that challenged conventional ideas about career progression in the legal profession. The panellists’ varied journeys and experiences serve as a reminder that there is no single path to achievement—highlighting the importance of staying true to one’s values, flexibility of mindset, and being open to where one’s ambitions may lead.
